Here you'll find videos I produced while living in Moldova. Each is designed to show the viewer some small aspect of Moldovan life — no small feat when many Americans aren't totally sure where Moldova is!
When I write, I think in images and sounds. So when it came to producing video, I naturally leaned toward photo slideshows, which allowed me to highlight one image at a time while using audio to tie the piece together.
I think photo slideshows are a fun, effective way to give a written story life, but I am also comfortable editing video.
- What is Moldova?
- Let's start at the beginning, shall we? I made this intro video for NeighborsGo, the citizen outlet for Dallas Morning News. I was their experiment - if they liked my video, they would ask other bloggers to make their own. They must have liked it, because now even Associate Publisher Oscar Martinez has one!
- Cutting a pig
- Moldovans use the word cutting where we may use the term butchering or killing, so if you get queasy at the sight of dead animals, don't watch. In this video, I document the Moldovan process of preparing pork for the winter.
- Memorial Easter
- The Sunday after Easter, Moldovans pack a picnic and head to the cemetery, where they honor their dead relatives. For a small donation, the priest will bless your family, anoint the graves with holy water and yell, "Hristos a inviat! (Christ has risen!)" Check out the story that goes with this video.
- First day of school
- On the first day of school, first graders recite poetry and sing songs for the rest of the students and their parents. In this video, I follow the ceremony that officially opens the school year as the first grade sings "Hai la scoala (Let's go to school.)"
- Apple juice, the Moldovan way
- The juice is sweeter when you grow, pick and chop the apples yourself!
- Boots for Petru
- I created this video to add an emotional core to my story about distributing boots to needy Romi children. This story had a lot of connections to my family back home in Dallas, and I wanted to express that using my voice and my photos.
